!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! have posted another picture of a very low approach at Gilze-Rijen in the Netherlands, this after posting a photo of a l !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . It looks like there are stop signs on the road, but no barriers. I guess you're on your own to watch for low-flying planes if you're driving by the base.

Taken in Winter 1987 by Jan Klijs, the photo depicts a Dutch Tiger flying with the 316 Sqn, about to land at Gilze Rijen.

The aircraft touched down short of runway 28 but the fence was low and the aircraft wasn't damaged too much.

Nowadays it seems to look like this. There are signs indicating a 300 meters stopping ban and when you're really close to the runway there are these signs indicating danger.

I thought of just that incident. I think it got written up in Jalopnik, and led to spirited debate about runway aprons, etc. Can't find it, though.

I'll be there this summer: RNLAF open days, Gilze-Rijen Air Base, 20-21 June.

Already booked my flight.

Looking forward to it.

I'm all kinds of jealous. I need to talk my wife into an international plane spotting tour.

To be fair, the airline tickets set me back only about 75 bucks.

I'm sure the debate was full of professional flight sim pilots.

I'm a regular visitor to the airshow held by Red Bull and the Austrian Air Force in Zeltweg. They even have traffic lights there...

Erm, who has right of way here? I lean towards the aircraft having it, and a lack of warning signs on the road.

Thats cheap, no matter where you're flying from.

I can beat it though. A two way trip from my house would cost me less than those $75 in fuel for my car. And yes, that's taking Dutch fuel prices into account.

There was a poorly marked stop sign on the road. The plane was a little low. Not sure who's fault, I would lean towards the SUV but might have to chock it up to wrong place wrong time.
